The art of being average
You know we are taught to be the one in everything we do. Always the best in everything. And because we cant live up to these “expectations”, we get depressed and disappointed with ourselves. Even with our lives sometimes.
Let me clear the stats here. See, every one of us is extraordinary and expert in one or two things in life. Apart from these things, we are pretty average at almost everything. Now, Its human tendency to see either the best or the absolute worst in all things. Therefore, as most of the times, we see the absolute best.
For example, I’m pretty sure we all know Steve Jobs and look up to him for bringing a revolution in the field of information technology and blessing us all with his company’s products. The first word that would come up to your mind when I say his name would be “revolutionary”, “genius”, “hardworking” and even “iPhone”. As I said, the human tendency of seeing the area a person has expertise in. But how many of you thought of “messed up family matters”. Yes, he was pretty bad at it. I dont want to go into detail but the thing here is, we look up to him and compare ourselves to him subconsciously. And then Voila! We feel disappointed at ourselves for not being that great at IT. But we dont understand that he was great only in this field, he was average in almost everything apart from it like history or science or art.
Similarly, we’re all average at most things but great at one. Maybe you haven’t found it yet, but trust me, there’s always one thing you’re extremely great at. So, by comparing someone’s extraordinary skill or activity with the thing which is not your passion; which is not the best of you, you’re just wasting time.
You cant compare a monkey and a fish in the competition of climbing a tree. It's unfair. And this is exactly what we all do. If you tell a fish to climb up a tree in competition with a monkey, the fish will forever think of itself as a loser. But if it utilizes its abilities in swimming, it will genuinely enjoy the meaning of life.
Maybe you’re average at studying, remember- its okay. You might be good at art or singing or maybe even writing. The list is endless. I'll end this article with a Steve Jobs quote- “Its okay if you haven’t found it yet, keep looking”
